Video Games Become Art

9 February 2011: It’s not every day an art gallery takes inspiration from video arcades, but London’s Barbican Centre is doing just that. The ‘Beat the Champ’ exhibit showcases 14 different bowling video games ranging from a simple 1970s Atari version to versions more recently played on PlayStation and Nintendo consoles. The exhibition is the product of Brooklyn-based artist Cory Arcangel who came to prominence for Super Mario Clouds in 2002 – where all the game’s features were removed leaving only the clouds. This is just another example of how digital art is making its way into artistic institutions. The Barbican Centre has become hugely popular since its launch in 2006, previously featuring work by Peter Coffin, who projected Japanese gardens on the walls.
