2 February 2011: As smartphones continue to grow in popularity, the potential of crowdsourcing apps is becoming increasingly important. Far from being nothing more than a real-world game, crowdsourcing services now enable people to report on the world around them to ensure their collective well-being. These apps are succeeding in not only providing real-time, location-specific data but are also boosting civic engagement by facilitating direct lines of communication. One example is the app CitySourced, which is available across all smartphone platforms. This app makes it easy for citizens to lodge a complaint with city halls in the United States about issues such as graffiti and poor roads to drug dealers in their neighborhoods. The app is now functioning across the United States and is being actively used by the LA City Council.
