Mobile Shopping the Next Big Thing?

10 January 2011: The future is looking bright for mobile shopping, so now’s the time to start planning your moves in the mobile world. Mobile’s role in modern retail is reflective of the role of the internet back when online shopping was in its infancy. When the internet’s penetration was low, people doubted online shopping would ever take off – in 1998 one man told TIME magazine that he questioned whether online shopping would ever be big. While smartphone penetration is still low, the number of people ringing up the tills on their mobile shopping is growing. 11 percent of people made purchases using their phones over the 2010 holiday season compared with only 2 percent at the same time last year. Retailers are reporting success with mobile shopping, with eBay saying that shopping on its app increased 134 percent this holiday season. Similarly, Amazon.com now brings in $1 billion annually from mobile sales.
