31 December 2010: According to a recent survey, nearly two-thirds of all internet users have paid to access or download content online. The Pew Internet and American Life Project surveyed 755 American internet users about their purchasing habits online. As expected, the results indicate that music and software are the most commonly bought digital items online, with 33 percent of people handing over their details to obtain this content. The effects of the large uptake of smartphones and tablet computers are also apparent in the results, with 21 percent of people having purchased apps online. However, online purchases were far from limited to these items. 18 percent of people have willingly paid for digital newspapers, magazines or journals, while 11 percent of people have paid to gain premium access to a website with limited free content available.
