2 December 2010: No one likes waiting in line and the queues only get worse in the lead up to Christmas. Thankfully, Old Navy is testing a new system from Apple that will make waits to the cash register a thing of the past. The system called Zipcheck is an iPod Touch-based easy pay system that enables shoppers to process their purchase with a sales assistant on the floor rather than at a till. An iPod loaded with Apple’s software is attached to a barcode reader and credit card scanner, enabling sales assistants to finalize a sale wherever they are. Receipts aren’t forgotten, with the device being wirelessly connected to printers around the store as well as to mini printers worn on staff member’s belts. If this test is a success and it spreads to other stores, the system has the potential to revolutionize not only the way stores are laid out and staffed, but also how easily busy periods can be managed, taking some of the stress out of Christmas.
