24 October 2010: New York coffee lovers are now able to pay for their daily Starbucks fix using their mobile phone. By downloading a smartphone app, customers can discard their physical Starbucks Card in favor of the digital option – saving time and leaving a little more room in their wallet. Starbucks Card Mobile for iPhone and BlackBerry lets users pay for their coffee by holding up a 2D barcode on their phone to a scanner at the counter. Like standard Starbucks Cards, users can manage and reload their mobile Starbucks account.
Starbucks launched a pilot program for Starbucks Card Mobile in San Francisco, Seattle and Target stores, which was met with enough success for it to be rolled out across nearly 300 stores in New York City and Long Island. The ultimate goal is to get customers to trade their physical card in for the digital variety, saving Starbucks money and customers time. This might not be as daunting as it seems, as 25 percent of all in-store transactions are already paid for with physical or digital Starbucks Card.
