10 December 2010: Commuters waiting for buses in San Francisco will be passing the time playing video games for the chance to win a concert by OK Go. Yahoo has installed touch screen displays in 20 bus shelters in downtown San Francisco as part of a new advertising initiative known as “Bus Stop Derby.” To play, commuters simply touch the screen and select one of the four games. They then select a neighborhood to represent and compete against commuters waiting in other shelters. The winner of each game receives points for their neighborhood and the neighborhood with the most points after two months wins a block party featuring OK Go. With digital advertising becoming an increasingly central part of advertising, it’s exciting to see the installation of such technology. The wait is now on to see how commuters respond to the new entertainment.
