20 December 2010: Coca-Cola is breathing life into smartphone wallpapers with their latest advertising campaign. The soft-drink giant has teamed up with AdMob to create ‘Live Wallpaper’ – an animated homescreen background that responds to phone movement and touch. Following the theme of Coke’s holiday advertisements, Android users with the app are able to send a man with a shopping cart careening around the screen and shake the phone to resemble a snow globe. While Coke is able to make advertising commonplace on the homescreens of Android phones, they will have to be careful not to be too aggressive with what they ‘push’ at the consumer through the application lest they irritate users. Through aligning with Google-owned AdMob, Coke has gained access to roughly 17 percent of the smartphone market. However, it is unknown whether smartphone giants BlackBerry or iPhone will allow this kind of homescreen takeover in the future.
